Stoner subculture--www.norml.org
Personally, the inital reaction to this site was that it seemed plain for the most part. There is nothing that immediatly grabs the attention of my eye. However, this site does seem to offer many different statistics about the uses of marijuana, the laws, and ways to teach the audience about pot. I find it ironic that the site wants people to stand up for what they believe in even though it is illegal at the moment. It is also ironic that there are links to access lawyers for the people who have been caught in action. This website proves that these people are die hard potheads who are striving for something they care about...and who said potheads aren't motivated??

I think I would enjoy discovering more about the subcultures of stoners/potheads. I believe that with the marijuana laws of today, and the changing times of states legalizing for medical use would provide statistics and insight on this group of people. However, many individuals belive that this group is nothing but a bunch of lazy people who get nothing accomplished. I hope to find interesting facts that could help my audience percieve a different view point rather than the stereotypes they have brought up upon.
I know the stoner subculture is believed to be that of irresponsible people of all ages, race, and gender. Im curious as to explore this community because I would like to find out if there are things that are beneficial to this group of people, and as to why many people have the views as they do. I think that it could be diffucult to break the opinions and stereotypes that people have already concluded about this subculture.

Blog on Chapter 3-Jake Burchell

In today's society, one form of media that is ever popular are the news chanels and news stations. There was a time long ago, when news was news, no matter how bad it was. Todays' stations are politically represented by Democrats, Republicans, and/or Liberals. Depending on the station, reporter, and the actual news can mean a whole different array of story-telling. I know that Fox news is considered a "Republican" news station because some members of my family would refuse to watch it just for that reason alone. Reporters and stations alike now will add there own spin or small twist to the story to make it better for their audience. For example, a few years back the media had a frenzy with shark attacks claiming that sharks were starting to attack more and more people all of a sudden. However, statistically this is not true. Oddly enough during this media craze, there were actually about the same amount of attacks compared to the previous years numbers. For some reason, the shark attack feeding frenzy was created making many Americans in a shocked state of mind with much disbelief. Gladly enough, the problem was not the sharks, nor the victims...it was the news' fault for portraying something to be way worse than what it really was.
As for news programs such as "The Daily Show" I feel as if they take the everyday news around the world, and sometimes water down the story or adding in there own details. They brilliantly put a different type of spin to the show that attracts different types of viewers. These shows in turn, educate the public about current events, provide entertainment, and in ways can even make things a little bit more interesting. In all honesty I do not think programs such as The Daily Show and The Colbert Report were created for the purpose of educating the public about current events. However, entertainment is very important in our American society. These shows entertain and educate at the same time while poking fun at minor problems with our world, which can basically be considered genius.

Hegemony 2

| I believe this photo depicts Hegemony very well in that the American society feels that we should regulate and "take care" of the rest of the world. This American flag wraps around the globe symbolizing our views in that if something bad happens, we seem to take action for that responsibility. America is sometimes nick-named the "World Police". We as Americans are known to help the world in all aspects. Americans are known to be very patriotic and some people believe being an American means to take care of others first. The American people are also known to stand behind each other through all times no matter how tough or bad the consequences. |
Commodification
Like my previous picture, this picture depicts the American lifestyles built around oil and petroleum products. This symbolic picture represents a major example of America growing into the nation it is today. Instead of the American Flag being raised, an oil well is represented as the flag pole. Oil is the fuel and power behind the American public in todays society. Back in the early 1900's to 1950's Americans only cared about their Freedom, nowadays...Freedom is overlooked by almost every single individual in this country. This picture could also be represented as...industrialization!
